Red Letter Day

urlToday the Church celebrates the feast of Saint Matthias the Apostle. This is where we get the phrase, “red letter day,” because of its increased solemnity.

Saint Matthias was the apostle chosen (by lot) to take the place of Judas. Think about that for a second. He was chosen to take the place of Judas. Yikes. But then again, the bar was pretty low for Matthias. I mean, all he had to do was not betray Jesus and he would come out looking like a rock star apostle.

So here’s my reflection on Matthias. Are you striving for excellence, or are you just trying to be better than somebody else? Are you stepping over a bar that is superficially low, or are you really giving your best for Jesus?

Almighty God, who in the place of Judas chose your faithful servant Matthias to be numbered among the Twelve: Grant that your Church, being delivered from false apostles, may always be guided and governed by faithful and true pastors; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
